
About 80 oncologists from 8 Asian countries including China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong gathered at Guangzhou to attend the formation meeting of the Asian Society of Cryosurgery (ASC) held at Guangzhou, China on 25th May 2012.
The main objective of the Society is to enhance the development and research on cryoablation, cryosurgery in particular, in the treatment of cancer in Asia. Cryoablation is a low temperature therapy which has gained importance in the medical field. It is widely used in the field of dermatology, gynaecology, urology, neurology, pulmonary medicine, cardiology and oncology. Cryosurgery provides a new option for cancer treatment especially for unresectable tumours or when radiotherapy and chemotherapy have failed to work.
The meeting adopted the Society’s constitution and election of members of the first ASC Board of Directors was held. Prof. Nikolai Korpan from Austria, president of the International Society of Cryosurgery was appointed as the Chief Advisor. Among the five prominent medical specialists appointed as the honorary presidents are Prof Sajio Sumida, MD, past president of the International Society of Cryosurgery, president of the Japan Society for Low Temperature Medicine and member of Transfusion Research Center, Tokyo, Japan, and Prof Kecheng Xu, vice president of the International Society of Cryosurgery, advisor to the Japan Society for Low Temperature Medicine and chief president of the Jinan University School of Medicine Fuda Cancer Hospital, China.
Prof. Yueyong Xiao, M.D. of the PLA General Hospital, Beijing, a renowned minimal invasive therapy and cryoablation specialist was elected as the first president of ASC. Among the first board of directors of the Society elected was a Malaysian, Dr. Lim Yew Cheng, M.D. from the Gleneagles Hospital and other cryoablation specialists and oncologists from South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and China. Another Malaysian, Esther Law Lee Poh, MBA was elected as the secretary general and treasurer of ASC.
